If you haven’t been following the storyline so far here is a quick recap. It involves Superman and Ulysses, who is a reflection of the Big Blue Boy Scout. Like Superman, Ulysses was sent away as a young child for his own safety. Instead of landing on Earth, he was raised in another dimension. When Ulysses finds his way to Earth he is reunited with his birth mother. Superman realizes they have a lot in common and they become friendly. We later learn that he has been playing Superman and really wants “to sacrifice millions of humans to fuel Ulysses’ new home.” Of course, Superman can’t let that happen and an epic battle is staged.

Just because Ulysses wants to kill million of innocent people doesn’t mean he is evil. “Where he comes from, there’s just a different morality, to support utopia and highly intelligent evolved life forms, from their perception they fuel it with what they perceive as lower evolved species,” Geoff Johns told USA Today. “I think a lot of people actually have that attitude as elitism and prejudice, and Ulysses grew up in that environment.”

In order to stop Ulysses, Superman will have to develop a new superpower “that is an extension of the Man of Steel’s physiology.” Johns says, “It’s definitely the most destructive power Superman has. And he’s not exactly excited about it because it is so dangerous and there are consequences.” The power is “very unstable” and will have serious consequences in the future for Supes.

Besides adding a new power, Superman will also be “rocking a subtle yet streamlined and fresh new look, and dealing with something that’s never happened in the character’s 77-year history.” Sounds exciting!
