The Dark Knight has fallen. The boy wizard has been vanquished. And then there was only James Cameron. As expected, The Avengers moved past The Dark Knight on the all time U.S. box office charts this weekend. Also as expected, The Avengers moved past Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 on the all time Worldwide box office charts this weekend. The Avengers now sits firmly in third place on both the U.S. and the Worldwide box office charts. Through Friday, The Avengers had accumulated $538 million at the U.S. box office and $1.33 billion at the Worldwide box office. While The Avengers claimed the title of biggest comic book movie ever Worldwide awhile back, it can also now claim that title in the U.S. as well. The only thing that stands between The Avengers reaching the very top of both charts is James Cameron. In the all time U.S. box office, Avatar sits at #1 with $760 million and Titanic sits at #2 with $658 million. The same ranking applies to the Worldwide box office. In the all time Worldwide box office, Avatar sits at #1 with $2.7 billion and Titanic sits at #2 with $2.1 billion. Can the Avengers overtake the two James Cameron films? There is quite a large gap that The Avengers would have to make up. While the U.S. numbers seem to possible be in reach for The Avengers, the Worldwide box office for Avatar sits at more than twice what The Avengers is at now. Of course, The Avengers has yet to open in Japan, but it would still take an awful lot of yen for The Avengers to catch Avatar.
