The Fate Of The Furious Is Eyeing A Massive Opening Weekend

It costs a lot of money to smash up dozens of gorgeous sports cars, but the producers of Fate of the Furious don’t have much to worry about: like its predecessor, the muscle car action romp is expected to make more than $100 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office alone.

TheWrap reports that the April-releasing blockbuster is looking at an estimated $110 to $120 million opening frame. That still wouldn’t beat out Beauty and the Beast for the biggest 2017 opening, but it would be only the second film to do so, unless one of the handful of releases slated to come out between now and the middle of next month manage to do it early.

The franchise’s sixth installment earned just shy of $100 million in its first weekend, which seems virtually guaranteed for Fate at this point. If it failed to earn at least $100 million after the massive $147 million domestic opening for Furious 7, that would be a big disappointment to the studio.

Of course, it’s unlikely to match that huge take, which came in large part because fans were checking back in with the franchise following the untimely death of star Paul Walker.

Fate of the Furious is currently holding a 3.50 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings, and will bring in new cast members including Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.

Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and produced by returning producers Neal H. Moritz, Michael Fottrell, and Diesel.

The Fate of the Furious opens in theaters April 14, 2017.
