Zuko lands on his dragon, saying he has not seen Zaheer, but that he did see a snow storm. Tonraq says the snowstorm is Zaheer. Tonraq and the others attack, with Tonraq saying that he put Zaheer away before. Meanwhile, Ming-Hua recues P’Li. She removes a headband to reveal a third eye. Using her firebending powers, she’s able to kill Zuko’s dragon and the criminals all escape.

Mako and Bolin’s family help them gain access to the upper ring, where they catch up with Korra, who is training and letting off steam with Asami. They confirm Korra’s suspicions that the Earth Queen is lying. The Earth Queen arrives and tells Team Avatar that they’ve located airbenders in an outer province, encouraging them to leave. Pabu, hidden in Bolin’s shirt, causes the queen to sneeze uncontrollably. They lie to the Queen, saying their airship needs repairs before they can leave.

Team Avatar convene and discuss what to do about the situation. Mako brings up a secret Dai Li fort under a lake that may have be repurposed for the conscripted airbenders. Jinora suggests using her astral projection abilities to check it out.

Where the airbenders are being kept, the Dai Li are forcing Kai and the others to train mercilessly.

Korra and Tenzin bring Jinora to the lake, we she projects herself. She finds the secret fort deserted. They ask if she knows where else they could be finding, and she lists off many places. Korra asks if Jinora can find Kai the same way she found Korra during Harmonic Convergence. She tries.

The Dai Li trainer continues to single out Kai, ordering him to be thrown into solitary confinement because he was acting out. Jinora find him alone in the cell. Kai is able to tell her that they’re underground, but nothing else. She moves to the surface and finds they are under the Earth Queen’s temple.

Team Avatar starts making a plan to rescue the airbenders. There’s a knock at the door. They expect the Earth Queen, but find Lin instead. She informs them of Zaheer’s escape. Korra demands to know what is going on. Tenzin tells Korra that the criminals attempted to kidnap Korra as a child. They never found out the motive. Lin says Korra needs to be protected, but Korra refuses to go until they’ve rescued the airbenders.

Jinora distracts the guards so that the rest of Team Avatar can sneak up on them. They split up to find Kai and the airbenders. Korra and Tenzin enter the barracks with the airbenders. They tell them to sneak out. Bumi signals for Li and Asami to bring the airship.

Mako, Bolin, and Jinora find Kai and go to leave, but are stopped by three Dai Li agents. Korra leads the airbenders, but are cut off by the Queen and her Dai Li agents. She says Korra taking the airbenders will be treated as an act of war. Korra does not relent. The Dai Li try to stop them, but the combined powers of the airbenders keep them at bay. Underground, a Dai Li agent gets ahold of Jinora, but Kai rescues her. The airbenders makes their way to the airship and leave the temple. Mako, Bolin, Kai and Jinora trailer behind, but catch up. Together, they leave the Earth Kingdom behind.

Once safely away from the queen and the Dai Li, Tenzin offers to bring the airbenders somewhere safe, or to let them come to the Northern Air Temple as Air Nomads. They accept his offer to go to the Temple. Tenzin leave for the temple, parting ways with Korra and Team Avatar.

The Metal Clan

Team Avatar is resting when Asami and Mako receive word of an airbender in Zao Fu, the city of the Metal Clan. Lin does not want them to go there, but Korra insists. The city is made entirely of metal. Lin doesn’t want them to tell anyone she’s here, but doesn’t explain why. She waits on the ship and sends the rest to find the airbender.

On Air Temple island, Tenzin’s family is welcoming new airbenders. Zaheer shows up and sneaks his way in.

In Zao Fu, the Metal Clan gives a tour of the city. They see a statue of Toph Bei Fong, the first metalbender. The guide says she used to visit from time to time, but left to find enlightenment and has never returned. Korra is introduced to the airbender’s mother, Su Lin, the matriarch of the Metal Clan, as she is practicing for a dance. The guide reveals that he is a truthseer, able to tell when someone is lying, and so knows that Korra was lying about no one else being here. She reveals that Lin is here, and Su says they’re half-sisters.

Su and Lin haven’t spoken in thirty years. They blame each other. They tell Lin that her niece is the new airbender. Su shows her two oldest boys playing a game they invented. Then they’re introduced to her artistic child. Finally, they meet Opal, her daughter. They argue over whether Korra will stay to train Opal, or Opal will go to the air temple. Korra agrees to stay to get Opal started.

On Air Temple Island, Tenzin’s family trains the airbenders. Zaheer is disappointed when they receive news that Korra is no longer with Tenzin.

Su and Lin continue arguing at dinner. Bolin and Opal hit it off. Varrick shows up, out of nowhere. He’s now in business with Su Yin, working on magnets. It’s the last straw for Lin, who storms off.

In the restroom, Bolin and Mako discuss Bolin and Opal and Bolin’s past romantic endeavors. Meanwhile, Korra meets with Su Yin. Su tells Korra of her and Lin’s childhood, left free to choose their own path and fighting for their mother’s attention. Bolin find Opal. He’s awkward now that he realizes Opal like her, but they keep talking. Eventually Korra comes and asks for Opal’s help with something.

Zaheer takes a locket from Tenzin’s study, but Ikki finds him. Kya finds him and is suspicious, then realizes who he is. They fight. Zaheer knocks Kya down, but White Lotus soldiers arrive. Zaheer beats them all and leaves.

Korra brings Opal and finds Lin. Opal opens up to Lin, but Lin just yells at her to get out. Korra’s angry at her reaction, and storms off. Lin cries.
