Kurtzman, who recently separated from his writing and producing partner Roberto Orci in order to pursue solo work, was already signed on the produce the feature for Universal. Plot details are sparse at the moment, but the reboot is rumored to be more of an action film than a horror film, drawing more from the 1999 reboot that starred Brendan Frasier than the Boris Karloff original.

“Over the course of developing The Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology,” said co-president of production Jeff Kirschenbaum. “He knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well.”

Kurtzman is also attached to direct the Amazing Spider-Man spinoff Venom for Sony, but that film has yet to be official put on their release schedule.

The Mummy is scheduled for release on April 22, 2016.
