“I can’t wait to get started and if you’re curious about the take? I’m not saying a word,” Protosevich wrote on his Facebook (via HitFix) page. “All I’ll say is this – it will be nothing like any version of Flash Gordon you’ve seen.”

The first draft of the script was penned by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Protosevich’s screenwriting credits include I Am Legend (2007), Oldboy (2013) and a story credit on Thor (2011) (story credit) — he worked on an early draft.

Flash Gordon is the space adventurer created in 1934 by Alex Raymond. Gordon and his allies fight against the evil tyrant Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo. Raymond’s strip has been a seminal influence on pop culture, particularly sci-fi, for decades. He has previously been adapted for three film serials, and a 1980 cult classic film that starred Sam Jones (Ted).
