While writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferreyra brought the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a new era, IDW isn’t resting on their laurels. Eisner Award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Freddie E. Williams II are picking up the baton and running with it as they usher the Heroes in a Half-Shell into another new, and exciting era this fall and now, thanks to an advance look at the beloved series provided to ComicBook by publisher, we can say it’s going to be an exciting new chapter — one that fans won’t want to miss.

As fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are aware, Aaron and Ferreyra’s final bow on the title is the upcoming issue #12 which will see the turtles face off in a final battle with the mayor of New York. It’s a climactic moment after the run has seen the Turtles dealing with all sorts of challenges, such as being ripped apart, accused of murder, and even tried as villains. While readers will have to wait until October to see exactly how that finale will play out, based on what we’ve seen of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13, it’s safe to say they boys make it out, get back together, and are ready to take on new challenges like the heroes they are.

Perfect For Longtime Fans… and New Readers
We can’t say too much — part of the fun for fans will be reading these developments when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 debuts in December — but we did get a look at a special New York Comic Con ashcan preview and are happy to say that this new era looks to be a good balance of the lighthearted fun Turtles fans love along with some of the darker elements that Aaron and Ferreyra brought into their world. Readers will be treated to the Turtles back together working as a team, but there’s also a major new bad guy named Ujigami who looks like he’s going to create real issues for everyone involved — and straight out the gate he looks sufficiently scary so prepared to be hooked immediately.
What’s especially great about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13, outside Luen Yang’s outstanding writing which does a great job of balancing fun and serious and Williams’ great art, is that the book is accessible to every reader. I’m not someone who has followed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles closely, but picking up this upcoming issue, I felt like I had a solid grasp of the story and characters right away. It makes this issue a great jumping on point without sacrificing what came before, something Luen Yang previously spoke with ComicBook about.
“I love Jason Aaron’s run. In fact, it’s a little bit intimidating for me to be following him, because I’m such a big fan of what he’s done with the Turtles.” he said. “One thing is, I really love the way in which he re-established the brotherhood between the Turtles, because at the beginning of his run, they’re all separate, and by the end they’re really bonded together again. So, we’re starting #13 off with them bonded that way. We’re really emphasizing the fact that they’re together again, and it feels really good to see them together again.”
He continued, “Without getting too spoiler-ly, he’s writing to something really big and it’s something that we just can’t ignore when we continue the story, right? So, I’m hoping, if everything falls into place, that the folks who really love his run will feel like our run honors what he set up.”
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 goes on sale December 10. If you’re at New York Comic Con in October, be sure to pick up the special ashcan preview.
