There’s no denying it at this point: Wonder Woman is a roaring success and is likely going to end up Warner Bros’ third-most financially successful film based on DC Comics — and the only one in the top three not starring Batman.
Even though the buzz surrounding the film is barely, barely, starting to die down, director Patty Jenkins isn’t resting on her laurels. Her wheels are already turning on what will become Wonder Woman 2.
While speaking with BuzzFeed about the first movie’s balance of action, romance, and comedy, Jenkins said that she’s “much more inspired to continue on that balance.”
But she also wants to relish in the pure fun the sequel can bring now that Diana of Themyscira is established in the world.
“There's always a struggle in an origin story to get to the point where that superhero exists, and now I'm dying to just let loose and have a great time with her,” said Jenkins. “Not for the whole movie, but in moments. I'm excited to see her power really soar, and us have a great time having a great Wonder Woman in our world. That's what I'm craving.”
There’s little doubt Jenkins will be back to helm the sequel, considering the huge success Wonder Woman has seen. President of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns already stated he's working on the treatment with Jenkins, and she herself said in the interview that “we're working on making the contract official.” An announcement at this point seems inevitable.
While we’re looking forward to see what Wonder Woman 2 will look like, we’re also still riding high off of the film we got. Few superhero movies are as entertaining as Wonder Woman, and it feels like the kind of story that will resonate for years to come.
Wonder Woman is in theaters now.
