Heading into San Diego Comic-Con last week, rumors began to swirl around Warner Bros. and DC Films, with whispers that the studio’s Batman, Ben Affleck, would soon be dropping out of the role. Here’s the quote from Affleck:
“Batman is the coolest f*cking part in any universe – DC, Marvel – it’s incredible, and I’m so thrilled to do it. I know there’s this misconception that because I didn’t direct it I wasn’t enthusiastic about it; it’s f*cking amazing… and with Matt Reeves doing it, it’s like I’d be a f*cking ape on the ground for Matt Reeves – nevermind being Batman! It’s incredible! So I’m really blown away and excited and it’s a great time in the DC Universe. You’re going to see some stuff from Justice League that we’re really really proud of, and I’ll think you’ll see why I’m really excited to be Batman.”
Fans will no doubt pan over this video over and over again, examining the actors every mannerism and tick for evidence of either genuine sentiment, or just classic studio media training, meant to quell fan fears.
Marvel Studios faced a similar situation after the success of its massive teamup event film, The Avengers, when franchise star Robert Downey Jr. showed was rumored to be wavering over contract disputes. Fans of Affleck as Batman hope that this situation is just as Affleck paints it to be; others are already making new plans for story ideas that could usher in a new Batman.
