It is no secret that Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin is a lifelong fan of superhero comics, but what is less known is that he sneaked a few references to DC Comics characters into his epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire.

The references come in the novel A Clash of Kings, the second book in the series which roughly serves as the template for the second season of Game of Thrones. During that novel and that season, Arya Stark, disguised a boy being taken to the Night’s Watch, is captured and brought to the supposedly cursed castle of Harrenhal.
During her stay at Harrenhal, Arya takes note of the family sigils of several lords and knights who came to show fealty to Harrenhal’s latest occupiers, the Lannisters. Among the sigils are a red ox, a purple unicorn, and a silver ferret, but most notable to DC Comics fans are the sigils in the form of a blue beetle and a green arrow mentioned on page 555 of the novel.
These sigils would remind DC Comics fans of the superhero characters Blue Beetle, who still would have been Ted Kord when A Clash of Kings was published in 1999, and Green Arrow, a.k.a. Oliver Queen. Putting the two sigils back to back seems like an obvious reference to the DC Comics Justice League members.
Just before mentioning the blue beetle and green arrow sigils, Arya also notes a sigil with a black hood, which may be a reference to the Archie Comics superhero Black Hood, though black hoods are a little more common and less specific than blue beetles and green arrows. However, the fourth book in the series, A Feast for Crows, also adds a sigil that is three lightning bolts on an orange background, which may be a reference to another Justice League member, The Flash or possibly Shazam.
Martin’s love of superheroes runs deep and goes back decades. He wrote multiple fan letters to Marvel Comics that were published in the back of early issues of the Fantastic Four. He also created the superhero universe of Wild Cards based on a superhero roleplaying game that he and his friends played. The prose anthology series is still going today with a live-action television adaptation in the works.
Based on the popular book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin, the hit Emmy-winning fantasy series Game of Thrones chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent kingdom.
The seventh season of Game of Thrones will see Daenerys Targaryen finally make her way from Essos to Westeros to reclaim the Iron Throne, while the Night King’s White Walker army marches south, bringing winter with him.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO.
