Earlier today, Gotham made a brief return for fans ahead of the show’s return. The superhero drama is slated to resume season three later this month, and the folks at Fox wanted to make sure fans were hyped about the comeback. To do that, the network dropped an action-packed teaser for the second-half of Gotham‘s third season – and there is a lot to unpack.

Not only do a slew of villains make an appearance in the trailer, but Gotham even inserted some throwbacks to past DC Comics films throughout the clip. Features like Batman Begins were hinted at in the trailer, and it looks like Batman Returns also got a clever nod in the teaser. Just ask Selina Kyle about it.
If you rewatch the trailer for Gotham, fans will see a scene where Selina is shown lying on the ground. The female character looks dead thanks to her sprawled out position, and the shot’s dark framing makes it all the more ominous. Then, out of the shadows, a cat is shown walking towards Selina’s apparent corpse.
For fans of Batman Returns, the scene will sound very familiar. The adapted feature saw Michelle Pfeiffer transform into Catwoman much the same way. The 1992 blockbuster saw the character get pushed out of a window by her boss Max Shreck after she discovers his evil doings. Selina survives the fall, but she is unable to move; So, when a hoard of cats swarm her, Selina simply sits there. When she regains full consciousness, Selina develops an identity disorder which sends her over the edge, causing her to cut most of the ties and take up the name Catwoman.
Earlier this year, Gotham‘s Camren Bicondova spoke at length about when she felt Catwoman would make her full debut on the show. In an interview with CinemaBlend, the actress said, “I think she’s always said that to make herself feel better and make it easier for her to live and survive, but after instances that are going to be occurring in her life soon, I think they’re actually going to force her to actually believe that she is this strong independent young lady instead of just telling herself that. I think that’s one step she’s going to be taking to becoming Catwoman.”
