He was recently announced as one of the main characters in a major motion picture, but first, he’s back on the small screen. John Stewart, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns, will appear alongside Hal Jordan as the main stars of Green Lantern Corps, the 2020 live-action movie from DC Films, and returned to animation today with Justice League Dark. The new animated feature-length film focuses not on the main Justice League team, but on the magical members of the DC Comics Universe, as Batman gathers them together to battle a mystical threat.

Never-the-less, the main Justice League shows up a few times during the film, including the introduction scene, when the League talks about strange occurences going on, John speaks up. “I fill in for Hal…” he starts, complaining about his timing of not being able to hit a hairy monster, and instead having to deal with some supernatural phenomena.

Stewart is voiced in the movie by Roger Cross, who also voices Swamp Thing, one of the main characters. The Green Lantern doesn’t have a whole lot to do here – he’s not exactly equipped for the particular threats, but it’s nice to see his profile rise back up ahead of his big screen debut.

John Stewart, of course, was a main character in the earlier Justice League animated series in the early 2000s, voiced by Phil Lamarr, and was a generation’s Green Lantern – so much so that when the live-action movie debuted with a white main character, there were a lot of more casual fans confused. The character also appeared on a handful of episodes of Young Justice, voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson.

We don’t know much about the future films in the DC Animated Universe, but hopefully this is indication that we have a Green Lantern-related adventure on the way and we’ll get some new John Stewart action in the near future.

“When innocent civilians begin committing unthinkable crimes across Metropolis, Gotham City and beyond, Batman must call upon mystical counterparts to eradicate this demonic threat to the planet. Enter Justice League Dark, reluctantly led by the Hellblazer himself, John Constantine. Like Batman, Constantine is a cunning, often cynical loner who is the best at his chosen profession โ€“ but quickly realizes the sinister forces plaguing the planet will require help from other supernatural alliances. Forming a new “league” with sorceress Zatanna, otherworldly Deadman, and Jason Blood and his powerful alter ego Etrigan the Demon, this team of Dark Arts specialists must unravel the mystery of Earth’s supernatural plague and contend with the rising, powerful villainous forces behind the siege โ€“ before it’s too late for all of mankind.”

Justice League Dark is available now on Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-ray.
