The Green Lantern Corps has experienced its share of shakeups recently, including the return of Hal Jordan and the combining of Sinestro’s old Fear Corps and the Green Lanterns. In the current issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, that status quo gets another big shakeup and an unexpected return.

Spoilers incoming for Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #18, so if you haven’t read the issue yet you’ve been warned.

The combining of the Corps continues on the Lantern’s adopted HQ Mogo, and John Stewart has gone so far as to green light the building of a Fear Corps Power Battery. This goes about as well as you’d expect, resulting in Guy Gardner and Arkillo of all duo’s to actually calm things down. Be that as it may, two of the Lanterns end up meeting a mysterious enemy in a far off sector, and Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner (now an ordinary Green Lantern, no longer the White Lantern) are prepared to go investigate the anomaly when some sort of portal opens up behind them. They don’t even have time to process how it managed to get past their defenses before someone emerges from the portal, saying ” M…my name is….Rip Hunter.”

Fans haven’t seen Rip Huter since the Vanishing miniseries before DC started its Rebirth initiative, but his appearance here is only the beginning of the mystery. He also says “The Green Lantern Corps has been….erased from the future….” He quickly passes out, but the other Lanterns notice one item in particular on his finger, a green lantern ring. Rip Hunter is always bouncing from era to era, so it’s unclear how far in the future he’s come from this time. It’s also unclear how there are no Green Lanterns there, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Lantern Corps just up and disappeared either, so anything is possible.

These days Rip is more known for his role as Captain of the Waverider in Legends of Tomorrow, but it’s great to have him back in action in the comics.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #18 is written by Robert Venditti with art by Dexter Vines and Ken Marion V. You can view the official description below.

“THE PRISM OF TIME” part one! The Green Lantern Corps has united with their once mortal enemies the Sinestro Corps, but there’s a storm brewing on the horizon as an enemy from the future arrives to rip the two apart. There will be no peace in this time.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #18 is in stores now.
