Injustice 2: 5 Coolest Moments From New Story Trailer

The Injustice 2 story trailer is here, and instead of just your favorite DC heroes beating the crap out of each other, it’s your favorite DC heroes beating the crap out of each other with context. Yes, there are villains, there’s the arrival of Supergirl, there’s a fight or two that should make you excited, and there’s the context of the previous game’s plights.

The first game Injustice: Gods Among Us was universally praised for its story, which was then further fleshed out in a digital-first comic book that has run consistently since before its release (and relaunches just in time for the launch of Injustice 2). Take a look at the five coolest moments from the trailer here, you know, after you watch the trailer again above.

Injustice 2 is the sequel to the hit 2013 fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us, which saw the heroes and villains of DC Comics clashing in brutal brawls. From the minds behind Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm Studios, Injustice 2 continues the story of a world where Superman snapped, and used his powers to become not just judge, jury, and executioner over the villains of the DCU, but eventually a dictator, ruling over the world with his fist of steel. After his defeat and imprisonment, the world is trying to pick up the pieces, but won’t have much time to rest as Brainiac hits the scene. Injustice 2 hits consoles May 16, 2017.

Juxtaposition

The heart of this trailer is the duality of the heroes of Earth, particularly Batman and Superman. As Brainiac narrates the trailer, he talks about the two sides to each of these heroes “Guardian, vigilante” he says. It’s a cool moment, and makes you think about these heroes, who in this world, have already had some big problems.

Batman Versus Robin

Batman versus Robin. Father versus Son. Not only is this a cool moment, with some awesome fight choreography, it also tells an interesting story – watching the way Batman is fighting closely, he’s really not. He’s horrified, he’s blocking Robin’s attacks, and he looks so pained by it. Of course, in the Injustice universe, Damien Wayne is already a vicious, killer Nightwing, so it’s unclear where this rewind is coming from – is he moving back to the old costume? Is this just a flashback? It’s uncertain, but WB Games did confirm to us that Robin is playable – and that new costume is awesome.

Heart-Wrenching Recap

The recap of the events that set the Injustice world on its path of destruction doesn’t seem to ever get any easier to watch. Here, we see the death of Lois Lane – and hers and Clark’s unborn child – once more, and the look on his face is powerfully hurt. Then we see what happens when you push arguably the most powerful man in the universe too far – and witness him shoving his hand through Joker’s body. Look, you can at least kind of get it, up to and including Superman’s anger with Batman for never putting Joker away in a permanent fashion.

Wonder Woman Versus Supergirl

Easily the coolest fight in this trailer is the all-out brawl between Wonder Woman and Supergirl. The two really smack each other around, and show off the sheer power between them. When Wonder Woman looks at Supergirl, clearly surprised by her level of strength and speed, and begins to draw her sword, then you know it’s on. Remember, by all accounts it looks like Supergirl’s in league with or being controlled by Brainiac here, so it’s all good.

Villain Revealed

Finally, in the closing moments of the trailer, we meet Brainiac, and see just why the heroes and villains of the Injustice universe are going to be going at it once again. Brainiac has long been manipulative, but this brand of master manipulator hasn’t been applied to him before. With Supergirl apparently on his side, and a world that’s already been torn apart at the seams, Brainiac has an easier job – and the heroes a harder one – than he would on most DC alternate Earths.
