The DC Extended Universe may not be as extensive as Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but it will be soon enough. With Wonder Woman have just premiered, the film’s overwhelming success has reinvigorated interest in DC’s impending films. Justice League is slated to debut in November, and fans have wondered for months about whether the film will include a Green Lantern cameo. Now, online speculation about the guest-role is hitting a new high thanks to a new intro sequence for DC Films.

Just before Wonder Woman hit theaters, fans learned that DC would roll out a new intro sequence with the film. The animated intro is similar to the new one which Marvel Studios now screens as it features a slew of heroes. The intro’s background is filled with B-list characters, but it spotlights seven heroes in particular. The founding members of the Justice League get a spotlight, but it’s the appearance of Green Lantern that has fans chattering.
So far, the DCEU has not included any Green Lantern as Ryan Reynold’s go at Hal Jordan pre-dates the franchise. The hero is included in the Justice League line-up, and fans are now thinking the intro may be hinting at the Green Lantern’s impending debut.
Rumors have suggested that a Green Lantern will appear in Justice League for months now, and DC’s new intro is only feeding those suspicions. The focus put upon Hal Jordan in the sequence took fans by surprise as it primarily focuses on pre-existing Justice League members who already had live-action DCEU introductions. Green Lantern seems to be the odd one out in the sequence, and netizens think the oddity is enough to validate recentchatter about the hero online.
Over the last few months, the Internet has been buzzing about Green Lantern’s casting. DC Films is slated to usher in a Green Lantern Corps film come 2020, so fans were surprised that casting chatter was already making waves. Armie Hammer began teasing fans about his interest in playing Hal Jordan in the DCEU on social media, and stars like Henry Cavill helped the actor further his trollish game. If Jordan is really meant to appear in Justice League for a moment, then Hammer may not be kidding about his Green Lantern pursuits. And, in an even bigger twist, DC and Warner Bros. have managed to keep a massive secret from fans.
Still, it’s not impossible to believe that Justice League could include a Green Lantern cameo with an unannounced actor. Suicide Squad managed to keep its inclusion of the Flash on the down-low until it premiered, and Batman v Superman did much the same for its meta-human gang. The DCEU is still in a precarious place, so it makes sense that the franchise would want to keep its secrets close to heart. Justice League has yet to show Superman in any meaningful promos; Who is to say Warner Bros. isn’t doing the same for Green Lantern?
Earlier this year, one DC scooper did his best to convince fans that a Green Lantern would appear in the film. Umberto Gonzalez took to social media to tell his followers that “there is a Green Lantern in Justice League.”
“I forgot the name of the Green Lantern in Justice League, so we’ll see. Hey, maybe by that time they get to cast Hal Jordan and next we’ll throw him in there too who knows,” Gonzalez said. “It is confirmed that Green Lantern, a Green Lantern will be in Justice League. I don’t want to give you the spoiler obviously, but yes, there is a Green Lantern.”
For now, fans will have to wait until November approaches to see whether all of Justice League‘s rumors pertaining to Green Lantern are true. DC Films seems keen on using Wonder Woman’s acclaim to usher in a new era of filmmaking, and Justice League could streamroll some hype if it drops a character like Hal Jordan (or another Green Lantern) out of nowhere. If Hammer does wind up dropping into the film for a hot second, the Internet will bear witness to one of the DC fandom’s biggest implosions in years. And, somewhere off in Hollywood, the actor will be off laughing over his greatest bait-and-switch to date.
