Justice League is just about to hit theaters, but some DC fans aren't too happy with the film's director at the moment.
Joss Whedon took over for Zack Snyder after he had to step away due to personal reasons, and Whedon ushered the film to completion. That means he walked into a film that was already mostly put together, and that might be reflected in two tweets he recently liked, something that has upset some fans.
Joanna Robinson wrote, "JL's Steppenwolf is the worst comic book movie villain of all time and not even Malekith the Accursed comes close." Malekith is, of course, the villain from Thor: The Dark World, and in many ways, he did not live up to his potential. Someone later compared Steppenwolf to Tim Curry in Legend, to which Robinson wrote: "Me too and that only made it worse because Tim Curry is the BUSINESS in Legend."
So you might ask what's wrong with that, and the answer is nothing, but fans aren't happy that Whedon picked his first real comments on the movie to be two liked tweets degrading the film's villain. Whedon hasn't really done any press for Justice League since stepping on, with all accounts of his work on the movie from other actors and producers.
There's a variety of responses to the tweets, including ones that made sure to highlight it is Whedon's official account. Others took him to task for other elements and highlighted these "likes" as the final straw.
"So Joss Whedon ruined Justice League with his sexualization of the characters and bad CGI, but he has the nerve and audacity to come on Twitter and trash the movie. It's time for the DCEU fans to run him off twitter like the MCU fans once did," @LadySreviews said.
Others feel like this is much ado about nothing. "People not being able to take Joss Whedon favoriting a @jowrotethis tweet is a good example of how DC fans still need to purge their ranks," @Da7e said.
Fans will be able to make their own judgments on Steppenwolf as well as the rest of Whedon and Zack Snyder's work when Justice League hits on November 17.
