In a moment of enthusiasm last night, Suicide Squad director David Ayer echoed a fan near the red carpet at the film’s world premiere, said “F–k Marvel,” and later apologized for having done so, saying that he meant no disrespect for his fellow filmmakers and just got caught up having fun with fans.

While some fans are still upset over the incident, his abrupt 180 has led most people who have commented on it to conclude that the whole thing is kind of a non-story. Earlier today, Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada asked fans to “give Ayer a break” as his comments were “all in good fun,” and now Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee has chimed in on the filmmaker’s behalf, as well.
Hey @DavidAyerMovies – Don’t feel too bad about dropping the f bomb. It’s a compliment of the highest order! https://t.co/uSBokELsUB

…Of course, comedy nerds and fans of the late, great Bob Fosse might recognize that speech. Fosse’s film Lenny, based on the life of legendary stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce, featured a version of it as told by Bruce (played by Dustin Hoffman). You can check that out below.
Warning: Lenny Bruce/Dustin Hoffman doesn’t have the same concerns about an “R rating” that Stan Lee has. So…language.
It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
