Rachel Talalay, the Tank Girl director who helmed the third episode of Supergirl this season, told CinemaBlend that the references to Wonder Woman were right there in the script, giving them room to play without having to worry whether somebody would object to what they came up with.
They came when Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter guest-starred on the episode, titled "Welcome to Earth," playing the role of U.S. President Olivia Marsdin.
Carter is likely to return at some point, since there was a later reveal that her character was perhaps more compromised by aliens than anybody suspected...but it's unlikely they'll get to have as much fun winking at the camera as in her first episode, which included among other things a scene where Melissa Benoist did Carter's instantly-recognizable "twirl."
"[The references] were written in the script, and they were absolutely embraced," said Talalay. "We were allowed to push them, but they were definitely in the script. That was great because that gave us permission to just say 'We know we're doing Wonder Woman homages.' So there was an absolutely magical moment when it was scripted that Melissa was to do the Wonder Woman twirl to put herself out when she was on fire. Lynda came and said, 'I'll show you how to do it.' I have on my phone a video of Lynda Carter showing Melissa Benoist how."
...and now we know what literally every fan wants to see on the Blu-ray bonus features.
