Fallout: New Vegas was received extremely well across platforms, but according to the game’s lead world builder, it would’ve been a much better experience if it was a PC exclusive.

Scott Everts from New Vegas developers Obsidian Entertainment spoke to PCGamesN about the restrictions that the team faced when trying to create both the PC and console versions of the game. Everts said that if they’d been able to keep the game only on the PC, the end result would’ve been “a lot different.”

“We had a lot of plans early on,” Everts told PCGamesN. “Like, ‘Here’s where the water is stored, here’s where the farms are, here’s where the government is centralised.’ We had it all planned out – it wasn’t just a bunch of random stuff.”

For those who played New Vegas, it probably didn’t seem like a bunch of random components thrown together in different areas, but that’s because some of the elements that they had planned did make it into each version of the game. But while they were able to incorporate some of their initial plans into the creation of New Vegas, Everts continued and said that there was still more to be done.

“We could have gone further with that,” he said. “We had to simplify, so we had less stuff that would bog down the game engine.”

The Fallout series also has a reputation for bugs almost as much as it does for its open-world RPG elements, but Everts added that there wouldn’t have been as many performance issues if they’d stuck to a PC-only game.

“We would have had fewer performance issues,” he said. We did break it up a bit, but from my point of view it was a performance-related game and we had to fix things.”

The Mojave Wasteland also would’ve been changed if the game was exclusive to PCs as well. Everts said that they could’ve divided it into different zones and walled in the entire environment, saying that “you just see the big tower and it’s a bunch of little zones.”

A PC-exclusive launch of a Fallout game seems unlikely considering the success the series has had across platforms, but Obsidian has voiced a desire to create another Fallout game sometime, so they might get their shot at catering to the PC platform eventually.
