We don’t mean to toot our own horn, but we did kind of predict that Joker would be making his return in Injustice 2 long before he was officially revealed to be in the game. Not only that, we also predicted the means by which he would return, despite his grisly death in the first Injustice. If you haven’t been able to get your hands on Injustice 2 yet, we’ve got a short clip showing Joker’s return for you right here. Check it out:

Injustice 2: Joker’s Return by WWG

As you can see, we’re not dealing with Joker proper, but rather a phantasm; an illusion; a nightmare caused by Scarecrow’s fear toxin. Leading up to this cutscene Harley Quinn mocks Scarecrow for thinking that his toxin would have any effect. We see her breathe it in deeply through her nose and quip that she used to huff the stuff for kicks. That’s when things get serious, and Scarecrow decides to try out his new formula. As it turns out, the new stuff works quite well.

This definitely one of the creepiest cutscenes in Injustice 2, and it’s a great example of the next-level facial animations you can expect throughout the entire campaign. Joker’s face as he slowly paces through the mist and calls out, “Harley, darling…” That twisted grin on his face and subtle wave of the hand sent chills down our spines, and Harley’s confusion and fear is clearly visible. What an effective entrance.

From here we get a very intimate look at Harley’s inner workings. Since joining up with Batman and his insurgence, Harley (Harleen) has turned a new leaf. Her inner psycho is still alive and well, however, and it’s this deep-rooted love for Joker and his violent manipulation that begins to call forth the old Harley. Dazed and hypnotized, she begins to approach an image of Batman, the symbol of her renewal and rebirth. That symbol is tied up and helpless, ripe for slaughter, and Harley once again wraps her hand around the familiar handle of a blade.

What happens from there you’ll see for yourself. This scene is a very small example the kind of powerful cutscenes you can expect to encounter throughout the entire Injustice 2 campaign, and each one seems better than the last.
