Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter Now Working on Nintendo Switch

Some brilliant and desperate Nintendo Switch owner has figured out how to play games with a GameCube controller, despite these controllers not being officially supported on the Switch. You're going to need an adapter to do this, and it's not the adapter that came out with Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U. You're going to need a specific brand of GameCube adapter from Mayflash. The good news? They're cheap, selling on Amazon for about $18.

So here's the deal. In order for this to work you're going to need to update some firmware. The Mayflash adapter is meant to be used with a Wii U or a PC. And in order to do this, you're going to have to hook the adapter up to your PC and update the firmware to the latest version. You'll also want to make sure that your Nintendo Switch is updated to the latest firmware, which should be version 3.0.

After everything is updated, once you plug your Mayflash adapter into the Nintendo Switch you'll want to flip it over to PC mode. Bam! After that you should be able to plug in a GameCube controller and play.

There are some limits, though. You can only use one controller at a time. When you plug two controllers into two separate ports, they'll both be read by the Nintendo Switch as player 1, so no multiplayer action yet. Additionally, the controller doesn't work well on all games. Reddit user "appleappleappleman," who discovered this little trick, noted that the controller didn't work consistently with Breath of the Wild.

While it doesn't work perfectly, this is a really promising start. The Nintendo Switch has proven to be open to more controllers than we originally anticipated, and we have a feeling that if Mayflash sales start spiking due to its limited use on the Switch, the producers may decide to push a firmware update that makes it play more nicely.

Stay tuned for updates.
