Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake Will Reportedly Make Big, Controversial Changes to the Gameplay

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag‘s rumored remake will reportedly make some big and likely controversial changes. The Assassin’s Creed franchise is Ubisoft’s golden child thanks to its mass appeal and the ability to tell near-endless stories since its an anthology story set across all periods of history. Some Assassin’s Creed games are far better than others, but it is a franchise that consistently give fans what they’re wanting. There’s always a big open world filled with activities, a lengthy story, and in more recent entries, tons of gear to collect and all kinds of RPG-y elements to allow players to create a bit of a grind for themselves.

The franchise has evolved and taken on a new form since Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2018, creating a game with more depth, but at the same time, it has pushed some fans away who were fans of a more simplified experience. With that said, some were overjoyed to hear rumors that Ubisoft is remaking Assassin’s Creed 4, arguably one of the best games in the franchise and one of the last games before the era of the RPG entries. Given the massive sprawling open-world that can be explored via a pirate ship, it seems like the game that would benefit the most from a remake on new hardware.

Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake Will Reportedly Cut the Modern Day Storyline, Add RPG Elements

With that said, it seems like Ubisoft is making some big changes with the Assassin’s Creed 4 remake. According to a new report from Jeux Vidรฉo Magazine (via Reddit), we have some tangible details on the new version of the game. For starters, Ubisoft is making Assassin’s Creed 4 more of an RPG with combat similar to the more recent games. Edward Kenway will also be able to have loot and gear stats with an inventory system.

The map will reportedly be the same size, but islands will have more activities and content within them. There will be new content including content cut from the original version. However, Assassin’s Creed 4‘s remake will also reportedly cut out the entire modern day storyline that had players working as an Abstergo employee in favor of a few hours of new content with Edward.

It was stressed that this isn’t a remake in the same way as something like Silent Hill 2 or the Resident Evil remakes, but more of a reimagining in the current vein of Assassin’s Creed with new tech. Ubisoft is also leaning on some of the tech it developed for its failed pirate game Skull and Bones to develop the Assassin’s Creed 4 remake in a cost-efficient way, but the report notes fans won’t notice it.

As of right now, we have no idea when we will hear more about the Assassin’s Creed 4 remake, but it is rumored to be targeting an early 2026 release with the possibility of slipping into late 2026. If it’s coming out that soon, it seems likely an announcement could happen at The Game Awards or sometime in November. Ubisoft has revealed and released some Far Cry spin-offs like Far Cry Primal and Far Cry New Dawn very quickly with this timeline, so we could see something similar here.
