Atari is resurrecting one of the most badass arcade games ever made, known for its psychedelic visuals and world-renowned soundtrack. Get ready, because Tempest 4000 is coming! This is not a joke. Atari just announced that the return of Tempest is coming this holiday season, and legendary game designer Jeff Minter is at the helm. This is getting done the right way, and we’re so excited to get our hands on this one.

“Just as in the original game, players are once again in control of the Claw, a powerful spacecraft equipped to destroy deadly creatures and other obstructions with rapid-fire shots on vibrant geometric prisms. With three game modes to choose from and 100 levels to conquer, players must eliminate all enemies as quickly as possible to survive, aiming for the coveted spot at the top of the leaderboards.”
The press release mentions that Tempest 4000 will hit current generation consoles and PC this holiday season, but there’s no mention of the Ataribox. Will Tempest get revived on an actual Atari console? We can only hope, but for now the official platform spread remains vague. Still, this is going to be worth picking up and devouring — trust us.
“At the end of the day, video gamers always win,” said Jeff Minter, Executive Producer of Tempest 4000 and founder of Llamasoft. “I am very happy to work with Atari again to bring a long-awaited sequel of Tempest to our legion of fans and a new generation of gamers worldwide.”
