Since its release, Battleborn has had a bit of a rough time fitting in with other similar games. When you consider the team-based and role-picking elements of the game combined with team objectives and a first-person view, it’s understandable to think that the game would have issues with it releasing in the same month as Overwatch. Battleborn may have come out a few weeks before Overwatch, but that time wasn’t near enough to build up a reputation before Blizzard’s game was released.

Randy Varnell, the creative director for Battleborn, addressed the Gearbox game’s community in a recent announcement that confirmed no more content was planned for the game following the fall update.

“As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update,” Varnell said. “Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on.”

While the announcement may be a disappointment for those still active within Battleborn, Varnell reassured those players by saying that servers will be active for the “forseeable future.” Taunts, balance changes, and Borderlands skins are all included in the fall update that’ll be the final content package headed to Battleborn.

But speaking of Borderlands content, it seems that Varnell also brought up the acclaimed co-op series in a roundabout way during the announcement. While he said that he’s been working on Battleborn nearly exclusively since 2012 and regards the departure as a bittersweet moment, he mentioned where he’ll be heading next in terms of development. He brought up Gearbox’s PAX West conference where they said they were hard at work on a highly anticipated game that many assume can only be Borderlands 3 and said that he’d be moving to work on that project as well.

Battleborn fans will likely stick around even after the content ceases if they’ve been playing the game this long, but for those who are simply fans of Gearbox, Varnell’s statements are pretty reassuring for the future.
