3 Things Even Fans Didn’t Know About Bayonetta

The first Bayonetta game arrived in 2009, introducing Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers to a new action-adventure heroine. The hack-and-slash title received two main series sequels, with Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3 moving over to Nintendo as exclusive titles for the Wii U and Nintendo Switch, respectively. It’s been a few years since the most recent game arrived back in 2022, with no new titles confirmed just yet. But that doesn’t mean fans aren’t still thinking about Bayonetta.

With 3 main series games and one prequel spinoff, the Bayonetta series has its fair share of in-game lore. Players have gotten to know the Umbra Witch fairly well over the course of her trilogy, but like any good character, Bayonetta has a few secrets. Here is some lore about the games that even dedicated Bayonetta fans might not know.

3. Bayonetta Never Appears Without Her Glasses

Glasses are an integral but controversial part of Bayonetta’s character design. Fans find her eyewear so continuous that mods have been introduced to let players remove them. But canonically, Bayonetta never appears without her signature specs. Across three entire games, the lead character of Bayonetta always has her frames firmly in place.

Some fans find it wild that a powerful witch would still require assistive eyewear, but she’s not the first magical figure to need a little help to see clearly. In a rare moment in Bayonetta when she does remove her glasses, the camera pans away so players don’t see her face without them.

2. Super Smash Bros. Exists in the Bayonetta Universe

Super Smash. Bros fans will know that Bayonetta has made several appearances in the games. She first appeared as an extra downloadable character for Super Smash Bros. 3DS and returned as an unlockable option in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But what even dedicated Bayonetta fans might not know is that the fighting game canonically exists in the Bayonetta universe.

According to Reddit user @ExpertgameHB, this lore comes into being through Nintendo’s Amiibo figures in connection to Bayonetta 2. Scanning certain Amiibo, presumably of Smash Bros. characters, will prompt Rodin to make a comment asking Bayonetta to introduce him to her “fight club.” Thus, Bayonetta’s participation in these battles is canon to the Bayonetta universe. Funnily enough, Rodin later appeared as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so it seems she did eventually make that introduction.

1. We Almost Got a Jeanne Spin-Off Game

Bayonetta’s best friend and fellow Umbra Witch, Jeanne, has a complicated role in the series. The powerful witch has been both a rival and an ally to Bayonetta throughout the series. Players even got to step into her shoes in Bayonetta 3. But what fans might not know is that the Bayonetta creator once had plans to make an entire spinoff game focused on Jeanne.

In a 2013 interview with My Nintendo News, series creator Hideki Kamiya revealed plans for the spinoff. At the time, he said he’d like to make a game based on Jeanne, “something that’s not as big in scale” as the main games. Furthermore, he said he wanted to focus on her working as a history teacher and the “fun things that could come out of a scenario like that.” We’ve had one spinoff already for the Bayonetta franchise, so it’s always possible this idea could still come to fruition.
