While a lot of companies are taking part in this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, there are a few standouts that won’t be there. Rockstar Games is likely to take a powder again this year, even though Red Dead Redemption 2 will be presented sometime during the show; and Electronic Arts already has its own plans, hosting its separate EA Play event just a few days earlier.

Then there’s Devolver Digital, which will host its own E3-style event, just as it has in year’s past. Instead of taking part on the show floor, the company will once again host an indie picnic event right across the street from the Los Angeles Convention Center, in a parking space right next door to the local Hooters. Here, the company will feature a number of trailers that have exhibits inside, including several of its forthcoming games, as well as others through sponsors like NVIDIA, Logitech and Alienware.

The show will be open to all E3 badge holders, and will take place on the same days as E3, running from the 13th through the 15th of June, from 11 AM to 7 PM.

Several game demos will be on hand, with tech featured by the above companies, and there will also be music, food, cold beverages, an Indie arcade featuring a number of titles, and carnival games, where you can win good old-fashioned prizes. Plus, the action will be live streamed over the course of the three days, through the Xsplit Twitch channel.

“This is the week the entire industry and fans everywhere celebrate video games as entertainment and art with numerous events now happening across Los Angeles,” said Mike Wilson, co-founder of Devolver Digital. “Indie Picnic is our way of giving back to the fans and celebrating a mutual love for games and art.”

It’s a fun little event to turn to if the hustle and bustle of the show floor is too much โ€“ especially now that it’s become open to the public. Plus, it’s a good chance to refuel with food and enjoy the opportunity to simply sit down and play a few games โ€“ nothing wrong with that.
