Injustice 2 has finally arrived after months of anticipation, and it brings with it a plethora of fighters, including heroes and villains, that fans of DC Comics and fighting enthusiasts alike won’t be able to get enough of.

But there’s more where that came from, as nine different fighters will be introduced via downloadable content over the next few months. Even though we only have an idea who some of them are โ€“ like the announced Red Hood, Starfire and Mortal Kombat‘s Sub-Zero โ€“ creative director Ed Boon did recently stop by the DC Entertainment studio to discuss what might be coming down the road. So, let’s get started!

The Reason Red Hood Was Added

Of course, with Red Hood, Boon wanted to add that extra oomph of power to the series. But the main reason that the vigilante is on the fighting roster is because he was the “most requested character” by the DC Comics universe โ€“ and for good reason, considering his comic book legacy.

Prepare For Starfire’s Badassness

Besides her popularity in the DC Comics universe, Boon noted that Starfire was added to the roster because “you gotta have more girl power in there.” She’ll make for a nice fit with Black Canary, Catwoman, Harley Quinn and other female fighters within the game.

For good measure, her super is probably “the most epic in scale,” according to Boon, where “she actually goes supernova in space.”

Sub-Zero’s Ice Cold Design

Even though there are hints that other Mortal Kombat fighters could come to Injustice, focus right now is on Sub-Zero. His costume was designed by the legendary Jim Lee, just as the original Scorpion was for the original Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Prepare For One More “Guest”

Boon made note that the downloadable content for Injustice 2 will continue all the way through the year, with some fighters likely due for summer, followed by an additional three in the fall and three in the winter. He didn’t note specific release dates as of yet, but the Injustice team will certainly keep us informed.

“People really seem to love guest charactersโ€ฆbut we’re still going to hit the DC rosters down. There’s definitely another guest in store, and people will be very surprised who it is.” A Watchmen character perhaps? Spawn? Raiden from Mortal Kombatย (as pictured above)? We’ll just have to wait and see.

And Boon also noted that they’re characters “built from the ground up”, and not more premium skins for already existing combatants within the game. So, yeah, you won’t be seeing the likes of “here’s Dr. Freezeโ€ฆwith Captain Cold’s moves” sort of scenario.

Injustice 2 XL, Perhaps?

Ed Boon made a quick note that “we’re going to be working on this game forever.” Could that indicate we could see further updates outside of the initial nine DLC characters that are coming? After all, Mortal Kombat X expanded into an XL package with four additional fighters โ€“ including the Alien from the Alien series โ€“ so anything’s possible. For now, though, the focus is on the general road map.
