Far Cry 5 caused a bit of a stir when it revealed its modern day western setting and fanatical militia antagonists last month. Think pieces remarking on how oh-so relevant the game in today’s America popped up like rabbits, and some rather ridiculous angry petitions were launched, but a major question remained – how does Far Cry 5 actually play? Well, Ubisoft finally provided a look at the game in action at their E3 2017 press conference. You can check out a new cinematic trailer above, and first gameplay, below.

The trailer is another moody piece, as we’re treated to various picturesque shots of small-town Montana, as the song “Amazing Grace” is faintly heard in the background. Of course, we soon discover the people singing it are automatic weapon-wielding zealots and psychos. This is a Far Cry game, after all.
The video below is a bit more interesting. It’s a “gameplay walkthrough,” which means it’s in-engine, but has been tweaked and edited to be more cinematic. You need to take out some cult members who are about to execute somebody, and you have the a gun-for-hire (Grace the sniper), friend-for-hire (Nick the pilot), and a pair of fangs for hire (Boomer the dog) watching your back. The gameplay looks fairly typical for the series, but it seems like Far Cry 5 will have more of an emphasis on teamwork, and the subject matter is definitely the darkest we’ve seen.
For those who haven’t been keeping up, things have gone seriously awry in the now ironically-named Hope County, Montana, as a doomsday cult called Project at Eden’s Gate, led by the charismatic Joseph Seed, have moved into town. You play as a young deputy sheriff tasked with ridding the county of Joseph and his followers, and you’ll be backed up by three able allies – a gun-toting Pastor, a foul-mouthed barmaid, and a farmer who happens to have access to a very handy crop duster. The odds are certainly against you, but together you and your posse will return Hope County to what it once was. Or die trying.
Far Cry 5 arrives on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on February 27, 2018. You can check out WWG’s coverage of the game, right here.
