Final Fantasy XV took a different approach to the Final Fantasy series compared to previous games, but the venture amounted to a total success. Plenty of active players and a desire for more content have extended the life of the game through DLC and multiple ports, but Tabata is certainly already looking towards his next project.

Speaking to GameSpot, Tabata said that he wasn’t quite sure if they’d take the open-world route with the next game, but it’s a possibility.

“It’s hard to say at this point if the entire game is gonna be based on an open world,” Tabata told GameSpot. “But I would say that the overall experience that users get from playing in a massive area, that overall game experience is something that we’re gonna make sure is in the next project as well.”

Tabata also spoke about the massive success of Breath of the Wild, another game that took a classic series and opened the world up for players to explore. While he owns a copy of the game, Tabata said that he hasn’t gotten to play it yet since he can’t find a Nintendo Switch in Japan, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t heard all about the game’s success.

“But just from hearing the stories and the feedback, you know, we can tell that it’s a really complete game,” Tabata said. “It’s very polished, almost a perfect game in that regard. And our goals are probably to take that experience that players felt with Breath of the Wild, but with our own technology and our own knowhow.”

The PC port of FFXV is next in line for the series, so it may be a while before fans see any more open-world ideas from Tabata, but taking pages from Breath of the Wild’s book definitely couldn’t hurt.
