Gears of War: Reloaded Players Divided Over Change to the Original Game

Gears of War: Reloaded — the new Gears of War remaster on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X — has made an unnecessary change to the original game, and players aren’t very happy about it. Thankfully, the change is small and ultimately doesn’t really impact the experience of playing the first-person shooter from yesteryear; however, it is unclear why Xbox felt the change needed to be issued in the first place.

In our official review for the game, we noted that Gears of War: Reloaded itself feels unnecessary, particularly for those on Xbox and PC, as they already received a remaster of the original Gears of War back in 2016 in the form of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. The differences between these two remasters are minimal, as both are very faithful. However, where Ultimate Edition was completely faithful, Reloaded has a couple of random changes. For example, it makes some odd UI changes.

Why?

One UI change that is catching the attention of Gears of War fans — and which caught our attention as well — is the killfeed UI. Now, every kill has a black box around it, which is different than both the original and Ultimate Edition. This is a tiny change, but it was immediately noticeable. Not only does it take away some of the nostalgia of seeing the classic Gears of War killfeed, but the new design is arguably bulkier and busier, making it less efficient as well.

To this end, one of the top posts on the Gears of War Reddit page over the last couple of days is a post complaining about the change and wondering why Xbox felt the need to make a change that nobody asked for. The post also takes umbrage with the points UI that now appears in the middle of the screen.

Of course, the popularity of the post, as well as some of the comments, echo the sentiment. However, others have pointed out that the information is now more readable, especially for those with poor vision. And this is almost certainly why the change was made.

“Disagree. It barely makes a difference, and it’s readable, so I like it,” reads one of the disagreeing comments. “Seems a lot more legible with the black box and blocks absolutely nothing,” adds a second comment.

At the end of the day, this is a smaller issue, especially compared to the serious networking and matchmaking issues the game has been struggling with since launch. However, it has nonetheless bothered some fans who prefer the original and nostalgic UI, and this more or less has confirmed that the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day will not have the nostalgic killfeed of the first game. Meanwhile, it is not the only change that Reloaded makes from the original.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think. Was this the right call from Xbox? Are Gears of War fans being nitpicky, or should this be changed back?
