After League of Legends players have been reporting late-game FPS and performance issues over recent months, Riot Games employees who work to keep the game running at peak performance have acknowledged the issues and say that they believe they’ve begun to find several ways to smooth out those fights.
If you haven’t heard the complaints from others about FPS issues, you may have at least been subject to such late-game issues yourself without knowing if it was a widespread problem or not. You can put aside worries that issues are solely resulting from your computer or Internet quality for now, because even though those do play into problems, several League functions have been identified as need improvement from the League team’s end that are being worked on.

“We’ve been digging into it for a few months now and tl;dr is it’s been a pain in the ass to track down,” said Riot JxE, the product manager of League’s Render Team. “We had been using Avg FPS to track how performance is doing and that wasn’t enough data to track down this issue. We’ve been putting in better tracking code and using that data to help better understand what’s causing the issues.”
Riot JxE went on to detail exactly which areas of the game they were looking to improve, saying that there’s more than one function that’s being optimized to fix some performance issues.
“All of that being said, we’ve found some good culprits and have started optimizing the code,” Riot JxE said. “We believe some CPU operations have been stalling the GPU which has been causing the FPS issues you’ve all been seeing in late game teamfights. Specifically, we’ve optimized a function called UpdatePerceptionBubbles() that is used to build the Fog of War and have done some optimizations to audio during our particle simulate phase that we believe were the culprits. We’re also going to be looking into other areas of optimization (like GameWorldLoop) now that we have better data.”
The Rioter closed out the post on the League boards by thanking players for bearing with them while they work to fix the issue, saying that they hope to have a solution soon.
