Pretty much everything about Super Mario Odyssey has been met with excitement from fans, with one glaring exception – what’s with the bits where Mario interacts with normally-proportioned humans? Even Shigeru Miyamoto was freaked out by it! It raises a lot of questions, most notably, if regular humans exist in the Super Mario universe, then what the heck is Mario himself? Is Mario some sort of weird Mushroom Kingdom creature who one day decided to put on a pair of overalls and try to pass as one of us?

Thankfully, the folks at Vice Waypoint cast aside decorum and just straight up asked Nintendo’s Kenta Motokura whether Mario was a human…
“Mario is human. In the world, there are many different types of people, you know.”
Phew! I mean, I’d still love Mario if he were an alien or mutant or something, but…phew.
Waypoint also got some clarification on some other burning Mario questions, including, what’s up with Mario suddenly being so into clothes in Odyssey? Overalls not covering it anymore, buddy?
“Well yeah, maybe Mario is becoming a fashionable guy. When we designed the costumes, we had in mind that when people travel they want to try on the clothes of the people that live there. So, we thought that we would incorporate that concept.”
Also, perhaps the most important question of all – is Mario still a plumber? I haven’t seen that guy so much as touch a plunger in 25 years!
“In the January [Super Mario Odyssey trailer] that we saw Mario jumps out of a manhole so I think he is still doing his job.”
Thank goodness – Princess saving don’t pay the bills. Super Mario Odyssey does its job on Nintendo Switch on October 27.
