Nintendo fans are finally getting a new Samus Aran adventure this year and like most Nintendo games, Metroid: Samus Returns will be fully Amiibo compatible. Nintendo will be releasing two new Metroid: Samus Returns-specific Amiibo, a sleek Samus, and creepy squishy Metroid, but the game will also be compatible with previously-released Super Smash Bros. figures.

Each Amiibo will have a basic in-game function, as well as unlock something after you beat the game. Here’s everything the figures will do:

Samus Aran (Metroid Series)

  • Aeon Reserve Tank (special ability refill)
  • Metroid II Art Gallery (unlocked after beating game)

Metroid (Metroid Series)

  • Metroid Marker (tells you location of nearest Metroid)
  • FUSION Difficulty Mode (unlocked after beating game)

Samus Aran (Super Smash Bros. Series)

  • Missile Reserve Tank (missile refill)
  • Concept Art Gallery (unlocked after beating game)

Zero Suit Samus (Super Smash Bros. Series)

  • Energy Reserve Tank (energy refill)
  • Sound Test (unlocked after beating game)

Looks like Metroid: Samus Returns is leaning on the Amiibo pretty hard โ€“ more so than a lot of other recent Nintendo games. Some of those unlocks, like the new hard mode and concept art galleries, are stuff fans won’t want to miss out on. No word on if you can still earn all this stuff in game, or what limits there will be on the missile and energy refills (presumably, you won’t be allowed to break the game by spamming Amiibo.)

While we’re at it, why not check out 15 minutes of new Metroid: Samus Returns footage from the fine folks at IGN? It looks like this game may actually live up to Metroid fans’ very lofty expectations! Fingers crossed.

Metroid: Samus Returns rolls onto Nintendo 3DS on September 15.
