The Xenoblade games may not get the attention of Mario or Zelda, but hardcore Nintendo fans know they’re not to be missed. Huge, ambitious, and innovative, Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X stand alongside the best Japanese RPGs in recent memory. The finishing touches are still being put on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but it seems series developer Monolith Soft are already moving onto their next big Nintendo Switch project.

Monolith Soft’s recruitment site recently sent out a call for designers, programmers, and planners to work on a new “ambitious project different from the usual brand image of Monolith Soft.” The listing specifies applicants should have experience with “action games and responsive combat” and an interest in “medieval fantasy and understanding of western entertainment trends.”
The Xenoblade games had real-time combat, but I wouldn’t exactly call them action games, and they were very much futuristic, sci-fi stories, so whatever Monolith’s planning sounds like a big departure. But hey, I’d love to see them try their hand at a western-inspired fantasy RPG โ Monolith has earned my trust!
Perhaps most intriguing of all, the recruitment post included two pieces of concept art. One features a female character bearing a sword and a bright red dragon, while the other is a more subdued scene featuring a knight hanging out in some ruins. That second piece of art has a bit of a Dark Souls vibe, don’t you think? Check out both pieces of art, below.
This project doesn’t even have a title yet, but it even in this very early form, it already has a spot on my “most anticipated” list.
