The game in question is called Shujinkou, and it released for PC and PS5 back in February. This indie game from Rice Games, Inc. may be a smaller title, but it’s also garnered some seriously positive attention from critics and fans alike. The JRPG brings players turn-based combat and dungeon-crawling goodness, along with a solid story and the option to learn some Japanese. The game has an impressive 90 Metacritic rating for PS5, and now, it’s available on the Nintendo Switch.

Heading into the first weekend of October, many gamers are more than ready to curl up with their Nintendo Switch and a great game. There’s no shortage of recent release options for the handheld. However, JRPG fans will not want to miss the news that Shujinkou has arrived in the Nintendo Switch eShop. After all, the game offers a story that spans 80 hours, giving you plenty to explore.

Sujinkou earns its high Metacritic rating in a few key ways. To begin, the game brings in much of what players love about JRPGs. It has turn-based battles, puzzles, and a ton of side quests to sink into. For those missing the early days of iconic JRPGs like Final Fantasy, this game brings back some of those mechanics. It’s also got a solid soundtrack and a hidden educational feature that JRPG fans will no doubt appreciate: it strives to actually help you learn Japanese.

For those curious to learn more about Japanese culture and the language, Shujinkou‘s educational component is a big perk. The game incorporates thousands of Japanese words, phrases, and grammar elements to help teach players the language as they play. If you don’t want the extra challenge of learning Japanese, you can also set the game to “English-Only” mode to focus on the immersive story and gameplay elements of this JRPG. Whether you learn Japanese by playing or not, the story of a retired Samurai working to save his hometown from language-devouring monsters is well worth experiencing.

Shujinkou has impressed players on PS5 and PC so far, with its appeal to JRPG fans as well as people looking to learn Japanese. It also features some cozy gaming elements like fishing and romance alongside that classic JRPG feel. It is now available for Nintendo Switch players as of October 2nd, and is verified to play as intended on the Switch 2 as well. Shujinkou costs $29.99, and there are a few DLC already available to further expand the experience when you finish the game.
