A new Legendary Pokemon has appeared in Pokemon Go, only it’s not the one that players were expecting. Mewtwo made a surprise appearance at the Pokemon Go Stadium event in Yokohama, Japan this morning, thus becoming the fifth Legendary Pokemon to appear within Pokemon Go.

While most Pokemon Go fans assumed that a new Legendary Pokemon would appear at the Pokemon Go Stadium event, most assumed that Niantic would release Ho-Oh at the event. And while we speculated that Mewtwo would appear at Pokemon Go Stadium earlier this weekend, even we had our doubts.

For many players, Mewtwo is “the” Legendary Pokemon to catch. Players have clamored for Mewtwo’s appearance in Pokemon Go since it was first released over a year ago.

Players were first tipped off to Mewtwo’s pending arrival when Niantic made several changes to Mewtwo within the game, nerfing its Attack, Defense and Stamina stats by 9% so that it could be realistically beaten by large Raid Groups. Mewtwo’s max CP dropped from 4760 to 3982 after the changes, which still makes it the most powerful Pokemon currently available in Pokemon Go. A Shiny version of Mewtwo was also added to Pokemon Go‘s game files, similar to the other Legendary Pokemon within the game.

As of right now, players can only catch Mewtwo at the Pokemon Go Stadium event. Similar to Lugia and Articuno’s first appearances in Chicago, players are guaranteed to catch a Mewtwo if they beat it as a Raid Boss…even though they’re given a whopping 50 Premiere Balls for beating this powerful Pokemon.

While we don’t know for certain, we believe that Mewtwo will be released for all Pokemon Go players later today.

Keep following our Pokemon Go coverage all day, as we’ll have plenty of Mewtwo updates as they happen.
