“With much sadness, but keeping all our fond memories, we must announce that Pixelmon is ending its development,” wrote an representative of the Pixelmon production team. “We have had a great time making this mod and creating such a wonderful community but after a request from the Pokรฉmon company we will be shutting our doors.”

The Pixelmon team began development on the mod way back in 2013 and offered a very authentic feeling Pokemon experience for Minecraft players, complete with gym battles and catching Pokemon. Pixelmon had released four generations worth of content and, according to the game’s developers, each version of the game received anywhere between 50,000 and 450,000 downloads.

Pixelmon lasted a surprisingly long time for an unauthorized Pokemon product, given how protective Nintendo and the Pokemon Company are of the franchise. Pixelmon’s makers have speculated that the Pokemon Company moved to take Pixelmon down now that Game Freak is developing a console Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch.

Although Pixelmon is still available for download as of now, it and any servers running the mod will likely get shut down in the very near future.

Fans of Pixelmon are understandably upset by the pending shutdown and have even set up a petition on Change.org asking the Pokemon Company to reconsider.
