Bizarre New Pokemon Revealed for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Two new Ultra Beasts are coming to Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Nintendo made the surprise announcement during today’s Nintendo Direct, revealing that both games would get a new Ultra Beast not seen in last fall’s Pokemon Sun and Moon games.

Both Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon will have one of the new Ultra Beasts exclusive to their respective game. Pokemon Ultra Sun will get the whimsical looking Ultra Beast code named UB Burst, while Pokemon Ultra Moon will get the brick-like UB Assembly. We probably won’t learn their “real” names until after the games are released in November. You can get a closer look at both new Pokemon in the trailer above.

What Are Ultra Beasts?

For those who haven’t been keeping track of Pokemon lore, Ultra Beasts are strange and powerful creatures from another dimension. Several Ultra Beasts appeared in the Alola region via cracks in time and space, prompting debate over whether these creatures were actually Pokemon or something else entirely.

While they’re called “Ultra Beasts,” these powerful creatures appear in the PokeDex and can be captured by a special kind of PokeBall called a Beast Ball. All Ultra Beasts have a special ability that boosts their stats whenever they cause a Pokemon to faint. 

In Pokemon Sun and Moon, the Ultra Beasts all but replaced Legendary Pokemon in the game, and were dominant forces in competitive play. 

What This Means for the Pokemon Franchise

Today’s reveal is actually pretty huge for the Pokemon franchise, as it marks the first time the Pokemon Company has added new Pokemon in the middle of a “generation.” Typically, main series Pokemon games haven’t held back any Pokemon for a sequel series outside Mythical Pokemon, which can’t actually be caught in-game.

Today’s trailer also confirmed several news we broke earlier this week, such as Lycanroc’s new Z-Move (called Splintered Stormshards in English) and Necrozma’s new forms, called Necrozma Dusk Mane and Necrozma Dawn Wings.
