Earlier this week, Prey finally added legitimate PlayStation 4 Pro support via a new patch, but, unfortunately, that update seems to have triggered a new set of problems. At this point, is that even surprising? I don’t have it in for Prey, I thought it was a solid, if flawed, game, but developer Arkane Studios really seems to be lost in the weeds when it comes to dealing with the game’s many issues.

Since launching, Prey has been beset with serious save glitches, bugs that let players craft infinite ammo and health, and all manner of other persistent problems. Every time Arkane lays down one patch, a new leak seems to spring up. Case in point, Prey update 1.04 made the game look a lot nicer on PS4 Pro, but it also completely screwed up the game’s framerate. According to the tech heads at Digital Foundry, the game is now afflicted with serious frame stuttering and screen tearing:

“This is, without a doubt, the worst instance of irregular frame delivery we’ve encountered, giving the illusion of a much lower frame-rate. In addition, as the game uses an adaptive v-sync solution, there is now a plethora of torn frames present in each and every scene along the top portion of the image. Taken as a whole, Prey no longer feels smooth to play.”

Whoops! There are also reports both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Prey are being affected by an odd bug that messes with the game’s field of view. After you enter a new area and pull up your menu, the game will zoom in slightly, reducing your field of view. There’s no way to change this back, aside from loading up a new area. The Xbox One hasn’t even received patch 1.04 yet, so it’s anybody’s guess why this is popping up now.

It’s pretty clear the makers of Prey just weren’t given enough time to iron out their game’s issues before launch. I’d say publisher Bethesda should learn from this, but it’s Bethesda, so that’s unlikely.

Prey is available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
