Get ready to gallantly beat the barf out of evildoers this year, because the River City Ransom series is coming crashing back, and this time it’s going full medieval.

The just-announced River City: Knights of Justice will deliver the classic multiplayer brawling and light RPG elements the series is known for, but this time around everything has been given a fantasy paint job. Your pals are all now knights and wizards instead of punk schoolkids, and you’ll do battle with druids, goblins, dragons and other fantasy bad guys. The game also has an overworld map, and a slightly more involved story than you might remember River City games having.

River City: Knights of Justice is actually a Western localization of a 2014 3DS game called Nekketsu Mahou Monogatari. You can check out some footage of the Japanese version of the game at the top of this post.
The River City series is far more prolific in Japan than it is here, where it’s goes by the names Kunio-kun or Nekketsu (which roughly translates to “Hot Blooded”) and has spawned nearly 50 separate games. While we typically only get the direct River City Ransom sequels here, the series has spun off into various odd directions over the years. Hopefully the announcement of Knights of Justice indicates Natsume is willing to delve deeper into the River City/Kunio-kun back catalog.
