Rare’s Sea of Thieves is just a few weeks away from release, and it promises to be the ultimate experience when it comes to all things pirating. But just how in-depth will it be? Thanks to a couple of new articles, we’ve got a better idea of just how long we’ll be setting sail – and how we’ll be able to do in style.

First up, IGN has reported that the game will have an interesting customization system. You won’t actually be able to design your own pirate, but instead choose from eight pre-made characters that you play with throughout your adventure. You won’t even be able to change their appearance.

The reason for this, according to Rare, is that it encourages players to connect more to the character that’s put in front of them, instead of trying to implement themselves into the game – a rather neat idea, to say the least.

One thing you will be able to customize, however, is the design of your ship. Your boat will consistently change, depending on the size of your crew, but the sails and other parts you select over the course of your adventure will stick around for the long haul, so people will be able to see just what kind of unique colors you’re flying throughout.

In addition, PC Gamer has uncovered some information about the longevity of Rare’s adventure, and it actually goes a bit further than you might think. The goal of the game is to become a Pirate Legend in status, as you build up reputation and prove yourself worthy to your fellow land-lubbers. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to gain access to a secret pirate hideout, where several legendary voyages await. By taking these, you’ll be able to earn top-of-the-line cosmetics, including clothing made out of kraken bones. And there will be even more steps that need to be taken to reach said Pirate Legend status, according to executive producer Joe Neate.

“When you’re out in the world, people will see you and know that you are a legend,” explained Neate. “Players will start becoming the Blackbeards and Black Pearls of our pirate world. We always want to have new things our pirate legends can aspire to, but also new things for everyone to have and do.”

On top of that, limited time events will also be offered as post-launch content, so would-be scalawags can keep an eye out for those, too.

Sea of Thieves will launch on March 20 for Xbox One and Windows 10.
