Yesterday Sonic the Hedgehog officially turned 26, which, uh…means he has to move out of his parents’ basement? It’s finally time to for him to buy that ring for Amy? 26 isn’t really a big milestone year, but Sega is celebrating it in a big way with some major new games and goodies.

Easily the raddest and baddest bit of birthday merch are a pair of new slip-on sneakers from Japanese shoemaker Anippon. These shoes replicate everything about Sonic’s iconic kicks – the red leather, the while stripe, the gold buckle on the side – without looking too terribly dorky. You could wear these around town and only your fellow hardcore Sonic bros will get the reference. Everyone else will just wonder why you’re standing around tapping your foot so much.

Oh, and yeah, slip-ons aren’t really made for intense running, but take a look at Sonic’s shoes – what are they missing? Yup, no laces. Sonic has been jetting around in loafers all along. You just need to stuff some nice puffy white sport socks in them so they won’t slip off.
Sonic’s birthday shoes are a limited-edition item, so if you’re looking to import some, you’d better do so now. A pair will cost you ¥6,500 (around $60) and go up to Japanese shoe size 28 (around a 9 or 10 in American sizes). If you’re willing to pay the price, and don’t have Sasquatch feet like I do, you can pre-order your shoes right here. You can check out more pictures of the kicks in the gallery below.
The next year will be a big one for the blue hedgehog, with the retro-styled Sonic Mania coming to PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on August 15 and new 3D game Sonic Forces scheduled to hit PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch this Fall.
