At E3 2017 Sony unveiled a healthy chunk of new Spider-Man footage, showcasing a battle against Mister Negative and his gang, the Inner Demons. Wait, Mister Who? If you haven’t been reading Spider-Man comics over the past five years or so (and let’s face it, most Spider-Man fans don’t actually read the current books), then you probably don’t know who Mister Negative is. Why did Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games decide to go with a relatively obscure baddie for their big gameplay debut?

Well, for starters, it seems like Spider-Man for PS4 will be very much based on recent comic stories, featuring an older, more mature Peter Parker, and characters like Mister Negative, Miles Morales, and detective Yuri Watanabe. In addition to that, in a new interview in Official PlayStation Magazine #138 (thanks to WCCF Tech for transcribing), Insomniac reveals they’re focusing on the gameplay potential of their villains, rather than strictly how recognizable they are.
“One of the reasons we chose the Inner Demons [and Mister Negative] is because they have the negative energy weapons that require the player to mix up the strategies they use. We want to find villains that force Spider-Man and the player to mix up how they play: really push and pull them as much as possible. How can I challenge players as Spider-Man? How can we mix up the strategy?”
Insomniac previously confirmed their story will feature plenty of Spidey villains you may not be familiar with…
“We have a great cast and Peter is just one of many, many characters we have in the game. It’s a big, big cast. We have a lot of classic villains and we have a lot of newcomers as well.”
Bring it on, I say! Spider-Man‘s rogues gallery is second only to Batman’s, and there’s a lot of fun weirdos in there. Let’s really get crazy – bring on The Spot, Big Wheel and Stilt-Man!
Spider-Man swings onto PS4 sometime within the first half of 2018.
