It’s been several years since we’ve seen an open-world exploratory Mario game (though Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World weren’t too shabby at all), but Super Mario Odyssey happily fills that void with hours of blissful fun. And a lot of people really seem to be enjoying it.

As part of the sales numbers that Nintendo reported earlier this week โ which indicates that the Nintendo Switch has a healthy future ahead of it โ the publisher also noted that Super Mario Odyssey has shifted a lot of copies over the past three days. Since the game’s release on October 27th, it’s already managed to sell two million copies. And that’s before the holiday rush, keep in mind.
That puts the game as the fourth top selling Switch game to date, right behind Splatoon 2 with 3.61 million copies sold; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 4.42 million copies sold; and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which stands as the best-seller for Switch with 4.7 million copies sold. However, after January rolls around, don’t be surprised if Odyssey moves its way up the list.
Considering that Nintendo has already sold more than 7.5 million Nintendo Switch systems to date โ with more even expected to sell over the next few months โ Odyssey is likely to see a lot more volume, since many gamers are considering it one of the best games for the platform, if not the best. (Yes, it’s that good.)
And this also adds life to the idea that the plumber could return for another go-around on the Switch in a new adventure, as the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Koizumi, noted that the company is “planning and preparing games that people probably haven’t thought about, which will be released steadily over the next two years.” That not only means IPs we haven’t seen in years, but also potentially another Mario adventure. Super Mario Galaxy 3, please.
For now, Super Mario Odyssey offers a ton of enjoyable gameplay, and hours’ worth of secrets to hunt down. Think you’ve found all those Moons yet? Think again.
Super Mario Odyssey is available now for Nintendo Switch.
