Nintendo is killing it on the mobile front right now, between its hit games Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing, which are garnering audiences of well over thousands of gamers. But we shouldn’t forget about the big mobile hit that really put the company on the map – the platforming work of genius that is Super Mario Run.

And it turns out the game was a much bigger success than expected, at least on the Android front. Google Play recently posted its Best of 2017 honors, and named Super Mario Run its most downloaded game on the service.
Although the game is free-to-play, it does require a purchase in order to unlock content within its world. It initially released on iOS last December, where it racked up huge download numbers for Apple, before moving on to an Android release in March of this year.
The game has since picked up steam with the help of a hefty new update, which came out this past September. With it, players were able to check out a new world, along with various new characters and being able to use your own soundtrack from your song library.
That said, Nintendo did note that they were still looking to make a profit from the game, though the download numbers are promising, and could possibly give it the turnaround it needs in 2018. But by this point, a few players might have moved on to other Nintendo titles, like Animal Crossing, which also works on a free-to-play structure.
This Google Play award might help, however, so we’ll see how things go over the next few months.
Super Mario Run is available for download now.
