Earlier this week, The Pokemon Company began teasing what fans assume will be the next new Mega Evolution reveal for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. A series of posts about Malamar, the upside-down squid Pokemon, began popping up on various social media channels. But unlike previous teasers, there was no clear date and time for a reveal… at least, not yet. However, The Pokemon Company continues to celebrate Malamar, and honestly, it’s pretty entertaining.

Following the initial Malamar appreciation post, Pokemon UK has continued to share Malamar stan content. No official Pokemon accounts have reported what this is all leading up to. However, reliable Pokemon news source Serebii does note that a “special video” celebrating Malamar is expected to air on September 10th. But ahead of that, the Pokemon Trading Card Game has shared a new list of its Top 5 cards of all time. And the list just might surprise you.
Pokemon TCG Trolls Fans With “Oops, All Malamar” Pokemon Card Ranking
On September 5th, an article fans have been waiting for apparently appeared on the official Pokemon News website in the U.S. Titled “The Top-Five Pokemon Trading Card Game Cards Of All Time,” the article notes that the Pokemon company has “looked through nearly 30 years of Pokemon TCG cards to determine which ones have proven themselves the greatest.”
The featured image for the article does somewhat give away the joke, but if you momentarily thought it was a banner ad like I did, you’re in for a laugh. After an introduction that promises to reveal “the greatest ever” Pokemon Cards, the list begins… with Malamar. And then it continues with… Malamar. You guessed it, the entire list features several Pokemon TCG Malamar cards from Pokemon history.
I have to admit, if this is all leading up to a new Mega Evolution reveal, it’s the most entertaining Pokemon Legends: Z-A teaser lead-up yet. The article links back to the original “My Friend Malamar” video that started it all, reminding fans that this is probably all leading up to something. If Serebii’s intel is right, which it usually is, we’ll find out just what this all means on September 10th at 9 AM EDT when the special video airs.
That said, it’s important to note that despite all the fun it’s been having with Malamar, The Pokemon Company has not yet publicly shared this video air date. The info on Serebii’s website comes from “materials sent to content creators” as part of the campaign. But it’s pretty obvious that all this Malamar talk is certainly leading up to something.
Most fans assume that something will be the reveal of Mega Malamar, a Pokemon suspected to appear in Legends Z-A from prior leaks. If so, it will be the fourth new Mega Evolution design revealed in the lead-up to the October 16th release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
