Ubisoft's been keeping busy as of late, announcing new games in the Far Cry and Assassin's Creed series, as well as finally confirming a new release date for South Park: The Fractured But Whole, if all goes according to plan.

But let's not forget another big franchise that the company is currently handling – James Cameron's Avatar. The publisher recently noted that a game based on the series is in the works, with Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Interactive working alongside the team at Massive Entertainment – the creators of Tom Clancy's The Division – to bring the world to life in gaming.

However, like the forthcoming sequels that Cameron is working on, you probably shouldn't expect the Avatar game anytime soon. Ubisoft spoke with IGN about the forthcoming project, and indicated that it's going to take quite a while before its arrival. We're talking 2020.

"Avatar is one of the biggest and most powerful entertainment brands. Our first game was profitable and we have great plans for the new one, with a very strong studio and engine. The movie will be released end of 2020, so our game won't be released before FY21."

In layman's terms, it won't be out until the fiscal year of 2021, meaning that Ubisoft has anywhere between 2020 and March 2021 for the game to arrive. More than likely, it's timing the game's release alongside whenever Avatar 2 is set to arrive, which, at this point, seems around the same time.

It appears that Ubisoft wants to go for something more grander in scope than its original Avatar game, which came out around the same time as the movie and got a mixed response. With Massive on the job, there's no question that an intricate world can be created this time around, and the player can be given more to do.

We've got plenty to enjoy from Ubisoft in the meantime – including four big projects that are slated for 2018, along with this year's slate of games – so we can wait a bit to see how the new Avatar shapes up. In the meantime…how about that Far Cry, huh?
