As you may recall, a mysterious western-themed image made the rounds last month, leading many to speculate it was our first leaked Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshot. Turns out that wasn’t the case, as the image was actually from a new MMO called Wild West Online.

Of course, Wild West Online is probably never going to escape the Red Dead Redemption comparisons. In a recent interview WCCF Tech asked DJ2 Entertainment vice president of creative Stephan Bugaj whether the Wild West Online publisher sees the recent delay of Red Dead Redemption 2 as a good thingโ€ฆ

“Since Wild West Online is an online multiplayer game that runs on PC, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is not, we were never worried about direct competition. Admittedly, maybe it’s better to not have two Western games debuting around the same time, but we were never trying to take sales away from RDR and they hadn’t announced any plans to step into the PC or online multiplayer markets.”

Okay, fair enough, but what if Wild West Online were to make the jump to consoles? Then they would be competing directly! Could an Xbox One or PS4 version of the game happen?

“We’re not currently considering it, but the only thing you can’t predict is the future. For now, we will focus on making a great PC experience, and worry about whether or not we want to expand the platform base once we’re past the initial release.”

The rest of the WCCF Tech’s interview touches on some interesting such as Wild West Online‘s progression system, penalties for death, and destructible environments, and whether that leaked image was a well-time publicity stunt (Bugaj insists it isn’t, but I dunno if I buy that). Wild West Online will be released on PC this fall. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to saunter into town in Spring 2018.
