Halloween Reboot

Miramax and Blumhouse Productions are co-financing the new Halloween movie. The film is a direct sequel to the original Halloween and will ignore the rest of the series' continuity. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride penned the script. Green will direct.

Original Halloween creator and director John Carpenter will score the new film. Jamie Lee Curtis will reprise her iconic role as Laurie Strode. Judy Greer will play Karen Strode. Andi Matichak will play Karen's daughter. Nick Castle will take over the role of slasher Michael Myers. Universal Pictures will distribute the film.

McBride has spoken about attempting to recapture the dread of the original Halloween.

"The original is all about tension," McBride said. "Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) doesn't even know that Michael Myers exists until the last minutes of the movie. So much of it you're in anticipation of what's going to happen and the dread that [director John] Carpenter spins so effortlessly in that film, I think we were really trying to get it back to that. We're trying to mine that dread. Mine that tension and not just go for gore and ultra-violence that you see some horror movies lean on."

Blumhouse Production is coming off of a big year. The company had a string of horror hits in 2017. These include Split, Get Out, and Happy Death Day. In 2018 the studio will release Truth or Dare, The Purge: The Island, and Halloween. In 2019, Blumhouse will release Glass, M. Night Shyamalan's long-awaited Unbreakable sequel.
