Deadpool 2 continues to get back on track after a hitting a wall early in development. A new director has been attached (John Wick‘s David Leitch) and franchise star / producer Ryan Reynolds is assuring fans that creatively and technically, things are on lock.

The final third of the creative trifecta that made the first Deadpool was Zombieland writing team, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The two are back for Deadpool 2, and recently opened up about the subject of their approach to including X-Men character cameos in the sequel.
Speaking with Collider‘s Steve “Frosty” Weintraub, Rhett Reese said that throwing big-name X-Men characters in the sequel is not their approach, “Cause you kinda don’t want a Ferrari in ‘Deadpool’ unless it’s for a real purpose.’Deadpool’ is a gritty, grimy, smaller thing, with characters you aren’t as familiar with; it’s a little bit like lovable losers – it’s not the A-list of superheroes, necessarily.”

For fans concerned about what this means for seeing characters like Cable or even Wolverine (leading toward that X-Force movie team up), don’t fear: Of course the Deadpool 2 creative team is leaving that door open. According to Reese, “the occasional cameo or appearance by an A-list type person could be really funny and/or dramatic. So we have an eye open for those things, but we don’t want to just put people in it because we can now, if that makes sense.”
Few X-Men fans (as in none) would’ve picked Colossus and Nega Sonic Teenage Warhead as the pair of X-Men characters to cameo in Deadpool, yet both added great touches to the film, and established a larger X-Men connection that fans actually enjoyed, without dragging down the standalone nature of the story.
In other words, no matter which X-Men characters Reese and Wernick add to Deadpool 2, it’ll probably be a fun experience (again).
